Launching cocoa pods compost project to lower GHG emissions

We are thrilled to announce the launch of an exciting project in Côte d'Ivoire aligning with our commitment to sustainable sourcing and climate transition!

We have partnered with a local cooperative and LONO Côte d'Ivoire, an engineering company specialising in adding value to agricultural by-products. Together, we are looking to transform cocoa pods into organic fertiliser aiming to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions linked to cocoa production, while contributing to the economic and climate resilience of local communities. Particularly targeting the methane generated from the fermentation of cocoa pods’ heaps left to degrade on the land parcels.

New research to boost Ugandan coffee farmers’ resilience

New research to boost Ugandan coffee farmers’ resilience

Data collection is on! Since March 2021, data collection from Ugandan coffee producers is on-going in the Rwenzori region of Uganda. Our team of young enumerators from the coffee communities are now interviewing farmers with both quantitative and qualitative surveys about their current farming practices and revenues. Producers are positive and enthusiastic about the initiative and keen to benefit from the results to boost income diversification strategies. This new research partnership is still in the early stages, with only 20% of the surveys conducted, but we are already seeing promising insights emerge.

Led by Touton Uganda and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), with the support of the Sustainable Food Lab and USAID, the research partnership strives to find concrete diversification strategies to improve coffee farmers economic and climate resilience in Uganda. Since November 2020, the project team has been working to collect data that will help distinguish the most actionable on-farm income diversification strategies, based on the unique profiles and farming processes of Arabica coffee producers in Kasese district, Western Uganda. Playing our part to increase transparency in the supply chain: Tier 1 supplier map released

Playing our part to increase transparency in the supply chain: Tier 1 supplier map released

Building a deforestation free supply chain, right from the origins of our cocoa beans, is a key part of Touton’s sustainability approach. This can only be achieved through transparency and traceability of cocoa supply operations which is the rationale for publishing our Cocoa Cooperatives Sourcing Map for Ivory Coast.

The map showcases the name, location, and number of farmers of the Ivorian cooperatives that Touton has sourced its cocoa beans from during the 2019-2020 crop season. The publication of our Tier 1 sourcing information is part of a global cocoa sector effort - from NGOs to Governments and industry players - to map cocoa activities against protected land and forest, in order to better understand and address deforestation issues.
